What is Newsworthy?

Newsworthy rates the significance of world news. Each reading includes a score from 1 to 10, a brief explanation and an update time. Higher scores mean more consequential news. The score fades as developments age.

A bold “New:” before the sentence means this is the first time Newsworthy has covered that development. It stays for two hours after the reading was saved, and widgets may drop it a little later. It is not a verified event date. Below the sentence, a fainter line names its story and says how long ago Newsworthy first reported it, such as “US Iran War · 5h ago”; widgets put that age before the sentence instead (“5h ago:”). When the app opens, and when you tap that line, it first says when Newsworthy last looked, such as “Checked 23m ago”; so do Settings and “Checked at” on widgets.

Where to get Newsworthy

Newsworthy for iPhone and iPad is on the App Store as a one-time purchase. It needs iOS 16.4 or later; widgets need iOS 17 or later. The website is free and shows the same rating. An Android app is in testing and not yet available.

The rating looks old or won’t load

Check your connection, reopen the app, or refresh the website. If “Try again” appears, tap it. If a refresh fails, the last available reading keeps its original update time. If no reading has been saved, you’ll see a dash until the service can be reached.

Ratings are updated periodically, not continuously. A score may remain unchanged between updates.

Widgets and the app show different readings

Widgets keep their own saved reading and refresh on a schedule controlled by your phone. Battery restrictions and connection issues can delay updates. Check the “Checked at” time on the widget, and open the app for a fresh check.

In the iPhone or iPad app, add Newsworthy through the home-screen widget picker. Widgets are not available inside the website.

Each widget has its own settings: Show app name, and Appearance, which follows your device unless you choose Light or Dark. On iPhone (iOS 17 or later), touch and hold the widget and choose Edit Widget. On Android 12 or later, touch and hold the widget and choose its settings; the wording depends on your home screen. On earlier Android versions, the settings appear when you add the widget.

Appearance and notifications

Open Settings from the gear in the top corner. Appearance can follow your device (the default) or stay light or dark. Show timeline, on unless you turn it off, adds the past week’s developments below the reading. The privacy policy and this page are linked from Settings, and Publisher there names who publishes and edits Newsworthy and how to reach them.

Notifications need the mobile app and your device’s permission. In the app, notifications are off unless you turn them on. When on, Newsworthy sends one notification when the displayed rating reaches the minimum score you choose, which is 8 unless you change it, once per development. Nothing is sent for routine updates, and nothing interrupts you while the app is open. If your device refuses the notification permission, allow Newsworthy in your device’s notification settings and try again.

I disagree with a rating

Newsworthy assesses public news. Ratings are judgments, can be wrong, and are not a complete account of events or an emergency-alert service. You can send feedback to the support address above.

Accounts, payments and privacy

The app is a one-time purchase through the App Store. There’s no account to manage, subscription to cancel or in-app purchase to restore. For information about technical logs, local saved readings, notification registrations and support messages, read the privacy policy.
